About 2011 Census

The 2011 Census was not held on 8 March 2011 as planned, due to the Christchurch earthquake on 22 February 2011.

The Government Statistician decided that a census could not be successfully completed in 2011 given the national state of emergency and the probable impact on census results. 

Every five years Statistics New Zealand takes an official count of the population and dwellings in New Zealand. See links below for the latest information, and information about planning and development leading up to the census we had planned to hold.

Latest information

  • The next census will be held in March 2013 – media release on 27 May 2011.
  • Government Statistician Geoff Bascand and Statistics Minister Maurice Williamson announced the 8 March 2011 Census would not be held – joint media release on 25 February 2011.
