The New Zealand Census of Population and Dwellings was on Tuesday, 5 March 2013. 

Please mail completed census forms back free of charge.

The last census was held in 2006. The census planned for 2011 was not held due to the Christchurch earthquake on 22 February 2011.

Latest information

2013 Census products and services release schedule – census results will be released progressively over an 18-month period from 3 December 2013 to June 2015. The schedule will be updated on a regular basis.

Introduction to the New Zealand Census gives you more information about the 2013 Census. It provides information about what happens to your census forms, each phase of the census cycle, and the history of the census in New Zealand.

2013 Census Post-enumeration Survey (PES)  provides an important check on the accuracy of the Census of Population and Dwellings. Interviews for the 2013 PES were undertaken at approximately 15,000 dwellings selected from throughout New Zealand, between 9 April and 6 May 2013.
