National Accounts
Statistics NZ's National Accounts business unit is responsible for publishing the key measure of economic activity in New Zealand -- gross domestic product (GDP). The business unit has three main teams, involved with supply and use, the quarterly GDP, and annual expenditure and tourism satellite account production.
Prices
The Prices unit produces high profile statistics around price change and takes the lead in research into price change within New Zealand. The unit is responsible for key statistics and is committed to raising public and user understanding of issues around prices and price indexes. The main statistical outputs include the consumers price index review, labour cost index review and producing the consumers, labour cost, overseas trade, and business price indexes. The unit also publishes a quarterly newsletter, the Price Index News.
Business Performance, Energy and Agriculture
The Business Performance team collects a range of data and measurements on New Zealand businesses including internet service providers, the screen industry, innovation, research and development (R&D) and biotechnology, and business practices and performance to name but a few. The Business Performance unit is responsible for the IBULDD (Improved Business Understanding via Longitudinal Database Development) project that has proven the concept of building a longitudinal business database by linking administrative and survey data over time and filling any gaps with imputation. The Agriculture team also sits in this unit and is responsible for agricultural production statistics which cover livestock and arable farming, horticulture and forestry.
Work, Knowledge and Skills
Our Work, Knowledge and Skills (WKS) unit produces regular, high profile employment, wages and education statistics, and takes the lead in developing new statistics that meet user needs. The unit is responsible for major surveys - such as the Household Labour Force Survey - and has also been at the forefront of developing new statistics on labour market dynamics using administrative data.
Business, Financial and Structural
Business, Financial and Structural (BFSS) produces the annual statistical series on the financial performance and position of New Zealand business, business structure and demography, and agricultural production. BFSS also maintains the Business Frame, a register of all economically significant businesses in New Zealand and the population frame for Statistics NZ's economic surveys.
