Table Builder business demography tables

Business demographic statistics give an annual snapshot (as at February) of the structure and characteristics of New Zealand businesses. The tables below are based on the business demography statistics released in October 2009. This series is based on the Statistics New Zealand Longitudinal Business Frame (LBF).

Business demography statistics are limited to economically significant individual, private-sector and public-sector enterprises that are engaged in the production of goods and services in New Zealand. These enterprises are maintained on the Statistics NZ Business Frame, which generally includes all employing units and those enterprises with GST turnover greater than $30,000 per year.

Business demography statistics have been published using the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification 2006 (ANZSIC06) for the first time in 2008. The ANZSIC06 series has been back-cast to 2000. Previous business demography releases used the 1996 version of this classification.

These detailed tables include both the 1996 and 2006 versions of ANZSIC. This dual publication of the two versions of ANZSIC will be available until 2010 release of business demography statistics.

The following Table Builder tables are for the years 2000 to 2009.

  • The business size (employment measure) used in these tables is the employee count (EC). The EC data has been sourced from the Linked Employer-Employee Database.
  • Area boundaries use the 2006 boundary pattern.
