Reviews of Official Statistics identify key strategic statistical information needs, the current supply of data, and the priority issues to address agreed shortcomings and gaps.
The intention is that the reviews of official statistics will guide statistical development work on that topic, including collection activity, use of administrative datasets and data analysis. An important aim is to maximise the use and ensure the quality of current data, and minimise the need for additional collection activity. These reviews will:
- contribute to informing policy development and evaluation activities in the field
- contribute to informing research and understanding of the wellbeing of the New Zealand population
- lead to increased knowledge about and use of currently available data
- lead to improved quality and availability of data in the future
- assist in establishing a framework for future development in the area.
The desired outcomes for the review process are:
- Clarity in our joint understanding of strategic information drivers
- Agreement among stakeholders about information needs and priorities
- Consensus among stakeholders about relative roles in the Official Statistics System
- Coordinated & coherent development of social statistics and statistical infrastructure across the Official Statistics System
- Stakeholder collaboration and mutual support.
The long term aim is to complete reviews which cover each of the 12 domains (or topics) identified for POSS:
- Population
- Housing
- Crime and criminal justice
- Economic standard of living
- Knowledge and skills
- Health
- Paid work
- Culture and identity
- Social connectedness
- Human rights
- Physical environment
- Leisure and recreation.
The current focus is on six of these domains. Over time, Statistics New Zealand will consult with key stakeholders to evaluate and update each review, then make them available on this website for wider discussion and feedback.
